Meet "Henny Penny" and "Chicken Little"

Well, I did it again. ..Acquired some barnyard fowl.

This time for my two oldest children to hopefully be able to get involved in 4-H and showing the critters at the Fair, and also for the benefit of fresh grown eggs, and the chance to not have to pay nearly $3 a dozen for free range/organic eggs.

My initial investment for 2 sexed chickens..both hens. Was a total of $19.71. That was for the chicks being $2.25 each, plus 2 jar feeders that were about $4 each, and a 25 lb bag of starter feed that was about $7.

2 hens will eventually provide close to 5 dozen eggs per month.

The feed is only about a $7 cost per month for them.Plus they'll free range and also get kitchen scraps to feed upon.

And my kids will have a great learning experience.

O.k. So..I know you want to see pictures of the little warm fuzzies and you shall not be disappointed.

This is "Henny Penny" She is an Ameracauna. She has odd markings and it looks like she will wind up having the little ear tufts near the sides of her eyes.Can't tell for sure yet, but it looks like her feathers are wanting to tuft out a bit. She was the prettiest chick I could find ..markings wise.. out of the batch at the feed store.Her eggs will be a greenish-blue or bluish color,or a pinkish color. (I'm hoping for a bluish color actually, we shall see.

And this is "Chicken Little". She is a Buff Orpington. And will remain a yellowish/golden color. And will lay brown eggs.

In about 6 months from now our little gals will begin laying their first eggs. They will grow quickly.

Memory Lane...

Was helping my daughter clear out her room a little last night..and we came across a few items. One was a little wee booklet that I had gotten for my daughter when she was about 9 yrs. old..it was called "Honey from the Heart" ...in this little book it had a few pages where a mother could write something sweet to her daughter. It was fun to look at it again and see the words that I had written to my oldest daughter. One of the little sections was "what I like best about you"...and I had written.."your smiling face, your twinkling eyes"... Aww.

The trip down memory lane did not stop there...

As we had come across a box full of handmade yo-yo's that had started out to be sewn into a round design.

At this point for me..the tears started to flow, as they had been my grandmother's.

A project that she never completed.

All of the little yo-yo's are in a gold foiled box, and she had made a couple of pattterns for the yo-yo's out of meat tray foam. She was known to make her templates out of the meat tray foam parts. Talk about resourceful..ha.

Anyhow...I now have a new project that I will be working on...that is..complete what my dear grandmother had not gotten the chance to.

I of course will find somewhere to display the finished item with pride in my home and cherish it.

It is sometimes fun and yet sometimes bittersweet moments as well... to take a little jaunt down "memory lane" once in a while.

To cherish the happy thoughts, and the joys, and love ...and to recall the very dear, and precious people and moments in our lives... and in our hearts.

A nice Tuesday...

Well, this morning found me vacuuming/redding up the house a bit. ( no, not painting my house red!... we call it redding up... but it's actually readying up..ha(tidying)..I got the term "redding" from my husband years ago..never had used the term until I married that man..ha funny the terms we pick up from one another once we get married)

Then oldest daughter had her sewing tutor here for several hours.

During the time that the sewing teacher was here, I took that time to wrap Christmas gifts.

Then this evening I was able to work a little bit on hand sewing projects that I am making for both my mother and my mother in law.

After that... I worked a little on trying to clean unnecessary website clutter from my "faves" list on my computer. Not an overly exciting day today I know..but I did feel like I got a few things accomplished at least.

I also cooked up a big pot of soup this afternoon using the ham bone left from the Thanksgiving ham.

I put frozen butterbeans,frozen succotash and gumbo vegetables into the pot with the ham bone and plenty of pepper and water to cover, let it cook for several hours..yummy! It made a pretty hearty bean type soup. One of those "toss it in the pot and let it cook" kind of meals.

Seems that those ones that I never use a recipe for, but "guesstimate" on...are the ones that turn out pretty good..ha.

Writers Cramp

Well, it's that time of year again..the Christmas card writing time!

I didn't realize that I had so many friends and acquaintances..but once I drug out the Christmas cards ( yes, cheap skate that I am.. I bought lots of boxes of them at the end of the Season last year..and had about 7 boxes of new cards) I wound up using at least 5 boxes full of cards. I know that I have addressed at least 100 envelopes this evening.

Only thing is..all my friends and acquaintances don't live any where near me. Gee whiz! I have friends..they are just spread out all over the country.

Ahh well...the post office will love me this Christmas Season.....and I certainly hope that you all enjoy your cards..my hand hurts now

...at least I haven't wound up with a paper cut on my tongue from licking envelopes...yet.

Have you ever done that before? Oh gracious sakes! It's funny... but not funny. Especially when you declare "ouch!" and your hubby across the room says "what did you do now?" and you are going" I juth cuth my thung with the onvelophth".. meanwhile you are sticking out your tongue looking cross eyed at the tip of it, trying to see just how bad it has been damaged. Yep..the price we pay for getting those Christmas cards out on time.

I have a cousin that doesn't send his out until February..I think he may be on to something there...ahh well.

Hey ya'll!

Hope that you all had a lovely Thanksgiving Day!

We did. I didn't have to cook..yay!

My darling mom in law brought all the fixin's..plenty of yummies..actually enough to last all week without having to cook! wowzers.

She's a real sweety..so glad she adopted me.:0) hee hee.

We all had a nice visit together.

Friday evening I started getting all of the Christmas goodies from out of the garage..and "It's beginning to look alot like Christmas" :0)

We plan on decorating the tree this evening, and sitting and drinking cocoa and maybe take in a movie together.

The kids all love decorating the tree, and absolutely love the snowman collection that fills up the fireplace stoop.

We have snowmen that are musical and snowmen that are fiber optic. Lots of fun!

We tend to decorate all through the house.

The hall bathroom even has a mini lighted tree in it.

The hall entry has a waist high snow lady that has her arm posed into a wave.

The dining room table boasts a wreath into which a silver tiered display stand is filled with silver and red ornaments and topped with a cheery red bow.

The dining room buffet is our display area for our village buildings that light up.

....yeah..maybe I go a bit overboard..but after all..I'm just a big kid that refuses to grow up.:0)

Went to the big sale that Joann's Fabrics is having this weekend, and all the buttons were on sale for half off.

I am filling a handcrafted hinged wooden box that has compartments in it..full of buttons in all kinds of designs..for oldest daughters gift. ..shhh..don't tell. :0)

I usually don't get into the Holiday mood until I am able to get the tree up and decorated..then I get as excited as a kid in a candy store. I think it's mostly because I love seeing the looks on my kids faces and how much joy the little ones get out of seeing all the sparklies.

Well..the little duckling "Sunny" is about twice the size it was when I brought it home... and yes it is looking more and more like a girl Peking duckling every day. The beak is a pale pink and boy does it cheep loudly! It can't stand it if it cannot hear us somewhere nearby..it will set up quite the din of cheeping loudly if it cannot hear or see us.

It loves the noise the kids generate throughout the day..as long as it hears us..it is quiet as anything and doesn't make a peep.

During Thanksgiving visit we put it in a cage back in the kids room and it made lots of noise.

Today it is back near the french doors in the living room and is quiet as anything.

Spoilt little thing!..ha

I just found a large packet of wildflower seeds that I had been wanting to spread in the cottage garden area...yay! I am hoping that I can get in the garden tomorrow and rake up some of the bald areas and sprinkle a bunch more seeds in the bare spots. Alot of the seeds need a cold snap to be able to germinate. So, I like planting my wildflowers in October..but late November is just as well also. As long as the seeds like poppy seeds have enough of a cold snap.

I noticed that I did have some new poppy seedlings coming up in the garden the other day.

hopefully they will last through the winter and give a good show come Spring/early Summer.

I still have some blanket flowers blooming and a few roses that had started blooming in the cottage area.

The roses were to all be transplanted to the new flower bed, but some of them decided to start putting on quite the show, so I'll wait until after they are flowering to transplant.

I did manage to also get a few bags of toys and a bag of other items hauled to the thrift shop today.

I am wanting to do a thorough purge out, never did get around to it like I had planned earlier this year.

So, I think around this time of year is a good time to purge unwanted items out.

Some days I honestly think that the Shakers and Amish have a good idea....Simplicity.

I sometimes tend to feel a "materialistic overload" at times. Items here and there..and sometimes feels like too many of them..so when I start feeling like my life and house are getting cluttered..it's purge time.

I don't want to bother with garage sales anymore..as the last one we had here was a nightmare.

We have an area in our driveway where you have to watch your step or you could trip(uneven pavement) and I kept telling folks "please watch your step"..well...

during our last sale no less than 5 patrons to the sale..said to me "oh..so you are warning me so that in case I did trip..I couldn't sue you!"

I kid you not..this happened at the least 5 times ..right after the other..I was like.."what??!" What is with these people??? "has our society become so sue happy that even a thing that used to be fun to do..a simple garage sale ..has now become a potential to be a law case?...No thank you!!!

So now..it's ebay or simply donate..ha...Let the purging begin..:0)

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

With Thanksgiving just a few days away..I expect that most everyone will be scurrying about their kitchens and getting their homes in order for friends and family to join in the gatherings around the table.

I myself will be getting my home ready for family to visit for dinner on Thanksgiving day.

I wanted to take this time to say that I am thankful for all of the friends I have met through "blogland". You all are very special to me and I'm thankful for you all.

A nice Saturday...

Today was a nice relaxing sort of Saturday.
Little "Sunny" the duck is doing well, and lets me know when
he/she has run out of water in her/his little feed crock by loudly chirping...ha.
I make a point to fill the crock up several times during the day, but ducklings love their water and drink quite a bit of it throughout the day.
"Sunny" has grown quite fond of me already and loves to snuggle in the crook of my arm in the evenings.
Spoilt yet???!..ha..yeah..he/she is already spoilt.
It doesn't take long..ha.

Well, this afternoon I was able to transplant about half a dozen rose bushes into the new flower bed. The flower bed is taking much longer to complete than I had anticipated. Ahh well..no big hurry I guess, it will get done.

"Farmgirl Flair" Etsy Team

I wanted to mention to you all that I have recently joined an Etsy team called "Farmgirl Flair"

This is a group of farm women from around the country that have etsy.com shops to sell their handmade wares from.

Etsy.com is a website that is very similar to Ebay.com, except the focus at Etsy is handmade/crafted items.

Anything handcrafted... as well as vintage wares and craft supplies.

Anyhow..a few of us Farmgirls from the Mary Jane's Farm website also have the etsy.com shops, and one of the gals (Kay from "The Rustic Cottage") contacted the Etsy folks and spear headed the idea to do a "Farmgirl Team". My husband Paul designed the banner for the etsy page, and also for the "Farmgirl Flair" blog.

Yo-yo garland and ornament ideas

I decided this year that I'd like to create a "homespun" looking Christmas. Where most, if not all of the decorations on the Christmas tree would be home made. I'm also trying to make sure that the majority of the gifts we give are crafted by hand, by either myself, or items that I have bartered for on the farmgirl website that I am a member of.

Here is an image of the yo-yo garland that is about 5 yards long and will be used on the Christmas tree this year. I also am posting an image of a couple of very easy to make ornaments.

The Victorian looking ornament is simply a rosette of lace, made by doing a running stitch into a length of lace and gathering it until it forms a rosette, then hot gluing a large wooden heart to which a victorian heart shaped sticker has been applied. Then embellishing with a ribbon bow and a ribbon hanger.

The farmgirl ornament is simply a vintage image reduced to 3 by 5 inch size, and printed onto card stock , lace is added to the back edge to "frame" the image, ribbon hanger attached to the back.

I will be making about 30 different farm related vintage images, as well as vintage images of nursery rhyme sayings.

Some of the cards will be trimmed with beading in silver and gold.

"Sunny" the baby duckling

Good News!

Had my dr's appointment today, and good news!...during my exam the dr. said I had no fibroids, no fibroid tumors, no tumors at all, and no cancer.I just laid there and said "thank God!"

I do have what they call "polycystic ovarian syndrome"...and am going to take some meds for about 10 days to help with that, and also get some blood work done related to this little thing...but Thank God it wasn't and isn't anything serious. I am so happy! Thanks for all the prayers and kind thoughts. Really appreciate it.(I've posted my "Bluebirds of Happiness" Collage today to commemorate this happy news)

Another good thing happened today... my hubby got me a baby Peking duck! The little thing is only 10 days old today, and is so teeny tiny, only about 5 inches tall at the most. It is half the size that Daffy was when I got him as a baby. This little gal/guy is so tiny it is amazing. It's little beak is only about as long as a thumb nail and only about as wide as my pinky nail. I will for sure post pictures tomorrow.

I have named it "Sunny"..because my day turned out to be rather bright and with good news, and then the little duckling as a surprise..I felt the name "Sunny" was appropriate.

Well..this week was "try new/different foods" week. After trying the buffalo burgers the other night..last night we tried quail...again purchased from our local Publix. 4 quail for $7.89 which averaged close to $2 per person for the meal.

The meat was very tasty...but quail are tiny, and you don't get much meat at all from it. But for something different for a change it was nice. I think though that for the price..I'd rather get cornish hens and bake those up...for more meat.We all agreed that we preferred the buffalo burgers though the best, as they were more filling.And easier to eat than the quail, and more meat for the money.

We tried it....

We tried it this evening..and we liked it.

What is "it" you might ask???

Well..."it" is... grass fed,organic,hormone free buffalo meat.

Wow! It was delicious too.

We bought a pound of it at our local Publix meat department in the "Greenwise" section of the meat department display.

I prepared burgers from it by adding only one egg, and simply using a little salt and pepper, and putting into a pan that was sprayed with extra virgin olive oil.

A very lean meat and almost tasted like a steak, but in burger form.

I payed $6.99 a pound for it, and could have easily gotten 5 juicy burgers from the pound, but made 4 ; 1/4 pound burgers instead.

I figure if I can get 5 burgers from the pound..that I am looking at about $1.39 per person..that is about what one could expect to pay for a greasy burger at a fast food place that is full of who knows what?? and maybe has even sat under heat lamps all day..bleccckkk.

...but with the buffalo meat..it is organic and grass fed meat with no preservatives or other unknowns in the meat...and what a difference in taste too!

We don't eat beef related products very often here..mostly we eat chicken..but we will certainly buy the buffalo meat again the next time we have a hankering for a burger.

I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Had a nice day here today. Had to stop by the feed store to get more duck feed for "Daffy". I found out that they will be getting in a shipment at the end of the month ..of baby chicks..

Aracaunas, Rhode Island Reds, and Buff Orpingtons.

The Aracaunas are the type that lay the easter egg looking eggs...in blues and greens.

Yes...I will probably go back and get an aracauna chick.

As I know my children would love to see the easter egg looking eggs. I know my oldest daughter Naomi would probably like to make craft items from the blown colored eggs too.

Quackers at Lake Caroline

Here are some of the photos from the trip to the duck pond/lake. Lake Caroline in our downtown area.

If you see the baby ducklings ..you can see why it was a bit hard to resist, but the mama duck certainly was being a good mama though. I have heard that the muscovy ducks make good sitters and mama's. A lady that lives next to the lake said these little baby ducklings were only 6 days old on the day I took these pictures.(Wednesday)

YAY!

For a long time we were in the number 3 spot. Out of curiosity I typed it in this evening and we have now landed the numero uno spot!

Paul and I went out to the downtown duck pond yesterday afternoon

.....a small lake in our downtown area that is home to quite a few muscovy ducks, a lone male mallard, a flock of about 7 geese,and other mixed breed ducks.... and lots of other waterbirds

...anyhow..one of the mixed breed muscovies had babies that were just 6 days old...(only 4 of them)

..yes..I admit with the weather dropping down into the 40's this week..I did have the passing thought of scooping up all the babies and giving them a chance...but..I didn't

...nature will take its course..the mortality rate on the lake for the little ones isn't very good, as we have seen the little ones before and gone back a week later and they are usually gone.:0(

I did get photos though and will share them with you all in the next few days.

I will have to wait until the Spring to get a baby duck from the feed store..but I tell you it certainly was tempting as they are wild little ducks, although tamed to accept handouts if that makes sense..meaning they are a community novelty where folks over the years have dumped their ducks on the pond/lake to do what ducks and geese do...and feed them handouts.

Butterflies in the Yard...

Here are a few images from my yard. We have Gulf Fritillary butterflies that show up in mid September and stay through October and November laying their eggs on the passion vine flowers.

I have a dr's appointment on Monday the 12th. ER doc said that I was most likely entering that next phase in a woman's life and that all my bloodwork and so forth was good, but that my hormones were probably just out of whack.

Well..I certainly hope that I can get through this stage with grace.

I felt anything but graceful the other day..ha.So..I'll be talking to my gyn on Monday.

Hi friends....

I will be laying low for the next few days until I get a health issue for myself out of the way. I spent my Sunday all day in the ER..not what I had planned to do with myself..I had big plans on working in my new flower bed... planting roses..but my body decided it had other plans for me, and decided to play "wonky". So I wound up in the ER all day long.uggh.

I am o.k. now. Just really tired out and will need to see my Gyn in the next couple of days to get things straightened out.

All my blood work and other stuff came back good, which is a real blessing.

But until I get this out of the way..I won't be on here as regular. But I expect that it won't take too much to get this little "glitch in the program" straightened out and I'll be back to the regular scheduled programming in no time.:0)

I'll pop in here as I can to say "howdy"..but for the next few days to a week..I'll be laying low..literally.

November already!....

Can you believe how fast the year has zoomed right on by? I can't.

Christmas will be here before we know it.

Wow.I have to get on the ball and craft a few items and do a little shopping.

Today I worked on getting my house back in shape..some days with 3 kids... and the usual hustle and bustle about that a family of 5 does..well..lets face it..the house can look a good bit raggle taggle. So..out with the vaccuum and mop and other cleaning supplies...and whipped back into shape in no time..well o.k...o.k. at least a couple hours and then it's back to looking clean again.:0)

Oldest daughter and I got out to Joann's fabrics last night..I needed some more fabric to complete a set of country gingham drapes for my french doors.

Then we stopped at Books A Million to visit with a group of homeschooling moms..for the monthly mom's night out.

Of course I had to get my little magazine "fix" too while we were there.

I got myself the latest issues of: Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion,Hobby Farm Home,and Southern Lady.

Those are some of my all time favorite magazines to curl up with during my "quiet mommy time"... and savor the ideas and lovely images.

...Besides our magazine that hubby and I create that is.:0)

I've been going back through the house doing some "clean out".Straightened the pantry today, and since our family is going "caffeine free" and "no more artificial sweeteners" ...I had quite a bit of tea varieties and splenda to get rid of.

That's just the pantry..ha.

I am going to tackle room by room... again.

I find it actually refreshing to go through these "whole house purge outs" every now and then.

It is amazing what can be accumulated and then never used/things that sit in closets and other areas just gathering dust.

And when you discover them again..it's sort of like.."oh..I didn't know I had that!"..or "oh..that's where I put that"..ha.

Went to a few garage sales last weekend..and I was able to find a really nice steel cage..large kennel style cage..but with a tray in the bottom. I am wanting to use it in the Spring to house a few bantams. I have been trying to decide on what type of bantam hens I'd like to get in the Spring. Hubby and I have been talking about the health benefits of raising our own eggs, and growing lots of our own vegetables.
We plan on having a pretty good variety of vegetables this Spring as well.

Wanted to share a website with you all that offers cute country graphics.... where you can create a few nice/unique Holiday gifts.

They offer little country clock faces..where you can buy the clocks at places like Walmart, remove the plastic cover, and insert one of the printed out country clock images to make a lovely gift.
