The Bathroom Re-Do/...and "Sweet Southern Iced Tea"

Gracious..it was difficult to get a good photo of the hallway bathroom today. But I managed to get a few to give you an idea of what the room now looks like.

I love the old fashioned lights..but..I don't think others would like them very much.I like the sort of gypsy type look they have.

Anyhow..I painted the bathroom a pale blue color.

It looks much better than a pale yellow butter color.Of course I'll be putting pretty tea towel up on either side of the vanity too.

So now I can say that this room is officially "re done" and the only thing it lacks is a couple of pretty tea towels on each towel holder by the sink.

Ta-Dah! :0)

O.k...so..I had someone recently ask about "good ole Southern Iced Tea"

Well..I'm pleased to inform you that "good ole southern iced tea" doesn't entail rocket science..oh no..it's as easy as punch...

Here tis' the recipe for making it:

4-5 bags of Luzianne or Lipton tea

1 cup of sugar

2 quart container

water

2 lemons

-----------

In a small saucepan bring your tea,water and sugar to a quick boil (it will get bubbly looking but you simply want the sugar to dissolve)..remove from heat.

Let steep for about 20 minutes.

Pour into pitcher and slightly squeeze the excess tea from the bags into the pitcher.

Slice the 2 lemons in half and remove seeds then squeeze the lemon juice into the pitcher.

After doing that..slice the lemons thin and just toss the lemon slices into the tea.

Then fill the pitcher with water and stir gently.

A pretty pitcher full of lemon flavored Iced tea.

Serve over ice.

After the tea has a nice flavor blend of tea and lemon..you can remove the lemon slices if you wish and simply get a fresh lemon and just add a slice of lemon to the side of the glass.

But there you have it...It's not too hard to do.

Cleaning out...

So..I've been cleaning out quite a bit lately..all evening yesterday I worked on clearing out and wiping out kitchen cabinetry..and then straightening up the items that I of course will be using.

The rest is slated for a garage sale.

Amazing the things you uncover in a deep clean out.

Things that you didn't even know you owned..ha.

Then this evening I helped oldest daughter in her room...clearing out and thinning out some of her huge fabric stash..wow..was I amazed when we had 3 garbage bags full of fabric..yikes! Of course there is a lot, a lot left to clear out of her room, but with a teen well..mom's can't be getting too pushy about what stays and what goes.But a heap of it needs to go so that the room looks nice for showing.

So..hopefully she'll want to clear out a lot more...as a lot of things can be had in a new town.

I hope to be able to get a picture of the bathroom re-do tomorrow.

I had every intention of getting all the caulking done a few days ago..but..just now finished it up totally tonight...so..I have to let that all set up.then I'll get the room ready to photograph.

When I was cleaning out my kitchen cupboards last night..I also have a big stash of flower and veggies seeds that I sorted through and put into sealed tupperware containers.

It will be nice to plan out a new flower garden.

I have some nice seeds to try for a new area.

Looking forward to that.

Whew...boy howdy..

Whew..I am a wee bit tired this evening..but..it's a good tired. I finally got the bathroom completely painted today, but now I have to do all the caulk work tomorrow..then clean up my mess...just a wee bit of a mess.... put paint can in garage and so forth...and general clean up/freshen up ...clean wash basin/clean bathtub/commode...the typical stuff..then hang the new shower curtain and put the decor back on the counter.

I have opted not to put anything on the walls. Want to leave those blank for marketing the house.

Tomorrow after caulking and cleaning the bathroom I aim to tackle a major clean out in the kitchen area...and then start getting the walls in that room ready for a fresh coat of brighter /darker tone of yellow in there. And I aim to add a cheery red and white gigham curtains to the windows there.

Again..that room will have all wall accesories removed and decor /very light decor on the counter only..my aim is to remove as much visual clutter from each room as possible.

But to make things look both welcoming/clean/airy/and cheerful as possible.

Then of course the entry hall and hallway are slated for a quick makeover too. All but 3 images will be removed from the hallways..all family photos are slated to be removed and stored.

The hallways will be painted a color called yellow squash..which is actually not yellow at all... but more of a light parchment beige color...and the trim will be a rustic barn red color. This is due to the fact that the outside of the house is painted in a light tan color called Gobi Desert and the doors are all painted in a color called Red Fox..which is a rustic red color.

----------------

I wanted to bring a bit of that outdoor color scheme indoors ..also I happen to have a wallpaper on the bottom half of the walls in the hallways that is a parchment look with apple trees on it..so I matched the colors perfectly to the wall paint.

I think it will look very nice when it is completed.

Currently the walls are a Martha Stewart pale minty green..and well..quite frankly that color feels a bit dated.

So..a wee bit of updating was in order.

Of course there is plenty more to get done..but those are the things that are "just for starters"...ha.

And since the paint in the house had not been spruced up in 8 yrs..well there are areas that need touched up and so forth. So..everything is getting spruced back up and looking chipper again.:0)

A Day of Relaxation...and Winners of Art work...

So..after a day of painting and subsequent sore muscles..I took the day off..sorta..I did weed out part of one of the raised beds, and pulled all the spent broccoli plants out of the garden, held the duckling for a little bit then put her in her plastic tub to swim..and a few other piddly things..but..I didn't paint today..I shall resume that task later.

Oh, and see the photo? It is of a gloriosa lily..I am fortunate to own one of these wonderful plants..that comes back every year at this time..they are really pretty vining lillies and the cool thing about them is that the flower looks like it has completely turned itself inside out.Very unique and very pretty, but... all parts of the plant are poisonous/so..if you decide to have one around your place..please exercise caution around small children and pets.---------------------------

Busy Bee...

Have been busy today, but am now a wee bit sore.
...have been all day yesterday painting cabinet door fronts and baseboard and door trim in my hall bathroom... then today I managed to get half of the bathroom walls cut in and painted.

And ugggh..I am sore a bit.

As most of the painting today was around a large,large mirror up above the vanity and the only way I could really reach where I needed to properly... was to be on my knees. Ouch! So..now a nice warm soak in the tub to soothe my achey muscles is in order.

The rest of the bathroom painting will go much easier though.

I went from a pale buttery yellow in the room to a nice seaside pastel blue color..like a light sky blue.

I got a nice white lace look shower curtain to go in the room and a dark navy blue towel to hang over the towel bar. I like hanging a nice white doily over the towel to make it look feminine.

I'll probably hang some pretty embroidered tea towels edged with a dark blue rickrack trim on the two little side guest towel bars by the mirror.

Anyhow...whew..I'm tired now.

But it is a good tired...little by little things will get in shape around here.

Was able to gather a colander full of green beans from the garden yesterday, and I put them in the crockpot with some red potatoes and sausage last night, and wow! did they taste wonderful. Nothing like a "fresh from the garden" taste. Absolutely yummy!

I hope that before the plants are done, that they'll give us at least another colander full of beans, as they were so yummy. Growing them will be a "must have" in the garden every year.They are a stringless bush bean variety.

The last couple of days there have been 2 tiny baby blue jays in the yard. I spotted them in the wax myrtles last night..but by the time I had camera in hand, I found only one roosting in the tree, the other must have been hiding pretty good, because I could not see it.
But did manage to capture the one on camera, and watch it for a while as it started to doze off. It can not fly as of yet,but hops from limb to limb and waits for the parent birds to bring it food.
Isn't it just darling?

I thought you'd enjoy seeing a few photos of it though.

Yikes..I've been MIA...

Gosh gals..it seems that I have indeed been missing in action for a week. So sorry! Yes I have been busy.

Our family has recently made a monumental decision to move forward with trying to relocate.(this time with a definite goal/month in mind on getting the house on the market)

So..as such that means that I will be busy with getting our home market ready.

Been cleaning out the hallway bathroom and sanding the cabinets and trim in there getting it ready for a fresh coat of paint, and also took some time to clean up/out the hallway linen closet. Next on the list after painting the bathroom will be tackling the kitchen and doing a complete clean out there.And freshening the wall paint and trim in that room then onward to more areas that need our attention.

Plus..I have to help get the next issue of "Small Town Living" ready..a few articles to get written and so forth.

Always something to do/get done.

I have missed you all..and I hope that you have missed me too.:0)

I did have to change out one of the images for the giveaway as I had someone begging to own one of them and unbeknownst to me they had had it in their etsy shopping cart for a while wanting to purchase it..and I did not know this..so they wrote me begging to be able to own it..so..I hope that you all do not mind that I have replaced the image with an equally charming one..this one of 2 sisters reading.

My apologies about doing the little switcheroo..I agonized over how to handle that one... so in any case..I hope you all still look forward to the selection that is still available though for the giveaway.

I am so very excited about the upcoming changes for our family. So excited that this will put us closer to both of our families, as for so long I have lived 500 miles away from what is left of my family..and this upcoming change will make it only about 150 miles away from them and..right in the same town as my inlaws.

So..we are all excited.

I have been in contact with a home school support group in the new area...and have been receiving nice emails from a few folks there.

Plus..I am looking forward to starting/being a part of a farm girl chapter. I was contacted by a farm girl in the area..so hopefully together she and I can grow a nice sized farm girl chapter in the area for gals that like to grow their own food and raise chickens and so forth..so we can get together and learn and of course gab about stuff like that.

So..anyhow..there's some change in the air and we are looking forward to it.

I am so looking forward to meeting and making new friends as are my kids.

Also I am looking forward to being able to grow my photography business there.

Well..gals..I'm off to go paint bathroom trim.

Fun Weekend...New Art..and more...

Had a nice day yesterday..we all went to the beach nearby and spent about 3 hours there.

It was a nice day out.

Fun to walk along and collect shells with my littlest one(3 yrs. old) and hear here exclaiming "oh I found another pretty!"

Then to sit with her in the sand while the rest of my crew went off with the metal detector to have fun..she and I tossed some crackers on the sand and waited for the seagulls to come flying by for a snack. I laughed out loud when she decided to name one of the seagulls "hamburger"..and wouldn't ya know I guess the kid planted a subliminal message, because then by the end of the day..what should I want for dinner exceot for yep...a hamburger...ha.

It warmed my heart to hear her tell me... "mommy... I'm having fun"

It made me so happy to know that we were creating memories as a family together...no I didn't have my camera with me yesterday as my son laughed out loud as his dad and sister covered his legs with sand and as we laughed together as we helped him wiggle back out of the sand and wash off...no camera with me as we all added bits and pieces to a castle that had perhaps been left behind by another family that had a bit fun just before us....but I have a big heart that can hold lots of pictures that the camera sometimes misses..and those are memories... oh such precious memories...each one a snapshot of love and laughter that no camera can ever capture...it's called... "the joy of a mama's heart."

"Sweet Home": is an 8 by 10 altered art creation on canvas.

I used a really pretty turquoise/bright robin's egg blue color on the canvas then created a scene using reproduction vintage images :millinery tag, victorian girl,rose botanicals, and a tiny bee. Added bits of glitter on the roses,and then aded a vintage tiny crocheted doily to part of the image..and some vintage ribbon..added a few buttons and ribbon embellishment.

I really like the cheery colors to this one and like how it turned out.

Today I have been cleaning out my closet a little..isn't it amazing that when you begin to clean out..you find out.."wow..I had stock piled quite a bit..and for what reason? If I haven't worn it in over a year..and in some cases two...then it needs to go."

Wound up with 2 garbage bags full of clothing..sheesh.

Yes..having a garage saleis in the plans soon.

I want to have a big garage sale...so I keep finding things to add to the growing pile in the garage.

Then I'll head out there soon and take a few days to sit and price and sort everything.

Then plan on a big sale.I'm wanting to be able to buy some paint to get some areas of the house painted.(interior)

Well...the garden is doing great..I checked on the plants today. It looks like the peas are nearing the end of their season..but..the tomatoes and green beans and cow peas and squash and cucumbers are entering their growth spurts..the squash plant is really...super loaded with blossoms and starting to set out some tiny squash..and the tomato plants are literally loaded..I mean loaded with baby tomatoes..and oh my gracious at the blossoms on the cuke plants! my word!We are going to have a bumper crop of those items it looks like this year. And the corn plants have grown a lot taller..so in about a month we should be seeing some corn on the plants and so forth.

A funny...and more..

If you were around in 1919 (just before prohibition started) and came

Well..I hope that you all had a good Mother's Day.The first few hours of my day(mother's day) were spent trying to nurse a baby chicken that sadly did not make it.But..on a better note..I did have a nice day.

My oldest daughter made a tea ring type pastry which was quite yummy.And my two youngest ones each drew me a picture for my refrigerator.

It's the simple things that let you know you are loved.

---------------------This afternoon I spent moving the refrigerator and the stove and cleaning out behind those and cleaning stove knobs and refrigerator coils. The vacuuming the entire house and mopping it too.

It's nice to do a good cleaning in the home like that.Everything feels and smells fresh again.

I've been getting the two oldest children's school portfolios together(we home educate), and the evaluations will be tomorrow afternoon.

I always breathe a sigh of relief to have this evaluation 0out of the way.

It's not too difficult really, it is simply that a certified teacher reviews samples of the children's school work at the end of the year.

And after this is completed our summer break can officially start.We do not take as much in the way of holiday breaks during the school year that the public schools take, so our required 180 days ends a wee bit sooner than the schools do.

But after putting in our 180 days, we all look forward to a little bit of a break.

Mom included.

But... I would not have it any other way.Being able to home educate my children has been a real blessing.

I tried edamama beans for the first time ever the other evening. They are different but good.

The bean pods are tough and as such you do not eat them, at least from what I gathered, but you pop the beans out of the shell and honestly they taste a bit like boiled peanuts. I liked them, and they made a good snack.

Howdy Friends...

Today was a nice day...a pretty day outside too.

Had a few errands to run this afternoon..just to the post office and to the bank...

then afterwards I took daughter to the feed and seed supply store...

as the baby bantam chicks we got several weeks ago were definitely starting to look and act like roosters.

So the feed store owner allowed my daughter to swap them out for 2 hen chicks that they just gotten in today that were sexed..the males were marked with green dots on the head and females were unmarked..

They had a batch of Aracaunas in today..so daughter got 2 aracaunas to replace the bantams ..and this time they are hens.

Yay!

Got "Mr. Collin" a new collar while I was there..he has started to outgrow the small puppy collar I bought him when I first got him.

So now he has a "big dog" collar..ha.

Suits him cause he thinks he's big stuff..ha.

He has been doing well with his training..he has the "sit" command down pat.

I just need to find a way to keep him from jumping up on me..any hints in this department would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to work with him on the "come" command..he seems to want to do it, but when he gets to me he wants to leap up..as in a "here I am catch me" type thing. So this aspect is a bit challenging. He doesn't seem to want to do a "stay" command yet though.

He does have a bit of the "lay" command down too..as that is pretty easy right along with the "sit" command.

He does well on the leash.. as soon as I got him I started him on a leash..the only thing is he doesn't know the "heel" command..he tends to want to pull ahead on walks.

So..at 4 1/2 months he still needs more training.

He's very smart though and definitely shows a willingness to please.

We are nearing the end of the school year...and as such my 2 home schooled children have their year end evaluations/portfolio reviews coming up..in fact next week..so I have been getting together all of tht material this week.

It's really not that difficult. Just time consuming. As the portfolios showcase examples of the students work from every month of the school year.

I do admit I'm just as bad as the kids when it is time for school to be out... I'm more than ready.

We certainly look forward to the break just as much as public school educated children....and hey..teachers/moms need a break too. :0)

Hi there..and thank you...

Hey there everybody....

Thanks so much for the kind comments and thoughts after our little weekend fiasco...

I am glad to say that all is well..there really was no damage at all..except for the cardboard backing on a cheap chip board bookcase I had..the bookcase was near the bathroom door where the overflow started..so the cheap cardboard backing acted as a wick...but..the bookshelf is still useable...and you can't really tell at all that it got damaged a little..unless you turn it around and look at the back bottom edge of it.

Then there were only like 2 small pictures that got damaged..and they weren't expensive things or heirlooms.

The walls are perfectly fine..the baseboards are perfectly fine.

Everything turned out just fine.All is dry..and best of all... No damages.

yay!!!!

The rug is dry now and back in the room where it belongs.

Everything is "right as rain again"

My floors just got a good mopping was all. (smiles)

AHHHHHH! YIKES!!!! WAAAHHHH!

So this evening I head back to the master bedroom to go fold the couple of baskets of laundry that had been waiting for me..and I step onto the large floral rug that we have at the foot of our bed ....

and my foot squishes into water.

Not thinking anything except for"oh no..H------ must have peed the floor and didn't tell mommy she didn't make it to the potty"

Oh now that would have been a much better scenario...but...then I took another step..and squish!

and then looked around...

standing water an inch deep in nearly all of my master bedroom!

I run to the master bathroom and see that the commode is full and water is spilling out everywhere!

I quickly turn off the water tap and start hollering.

And then I just start sobbing...and sobbing.

The entire bedroom is nearly flooded.

Large antique wardrobe has to be propped up on blocks. Things under the bed have to quickly be moved out from under the bed and wiped down.

And every single towel in the house gets put to use.

Oh dear gracious!

I am usually one to keep it all together..but for some reason I just stood there and sobbed and sobbed almost to the point of not being able to catch my breath..and then I pulled myself together..and got to work.

I've been the one that always keeps it together..when things go on around here...when there are emergency room visits unexpectedly..I'm the one that keeps the level head and all that...but why..oh why? did I not keep it together when my bedroom got flooded tonight?

Who knows? Guess even those of us that have to keep it together for those around us..have a moment when "the straw breaks the camel's back". Tonight was my turn.

But....the floors got mopped..just not the way I wanted them to..ha.

We got everything dry and the wardrobe is up on blocks and we towel dried everything.

Not too much damage at all thank goodness.I am so glad that we had a huge 6 ft by 8 ft. area rug in our room at the foort of the bed that wicked up quite alot of the water.

I am so glad that because of the rug there was no water to speak of near my walls. So no damage near any of those.Thank goodness!

We opened all the windows .

What had happened was the commode got a little clog , but..the chain mechanism in the commode was broken and when the tank would fill the sensor wasn't registering it was full so it kept running and running.

Ahhh!

Hubby replaced the mechanism and the little clog was gone.

Sheesh!

Luckily we all worked very fast and there is no damage to the floors and walls at all.Thank goodness!

My bed is piled with everything that was on the floors around the room and up under the bed. I'm tired and I think it will be a recliner night as I'll just have to tackle the bedroom tomorrow on setting things right again.

Week 6-Farm Girl Blog A Thon/ My furry and feathered friends...

Here are our feathered and furry friends.

"Collin" our mini schnauzer.

"Henny Penny" an Ameracauna hen

And "Goldie"(a.k.a. "chicken little") a Buff Orpington hen.

And then we have a few new additions to the family as of about 2 weeks ago:

"Marigold": a crested Peking duckling

..........she will wind up having a "top knot/poof" of feathers on the top of her head.

And then 2 baby bantam chicks of unknown species and sex.

We are hoping for hens/but it was a straight run order at the feed store..so we had to take our chances.

These little gals/guys are currently not named..as the feed store does allow us to return them if they are not hens.

Tea Talk

I missed a couple of weeks on the Tea time blog a thon over at "Gracious Hospitality"...but..trying to keep up with hosting the farmgirl blog a thon, as well as everyday life..I sort of fell behind.So sorry gals.

I simply zap it in a mug of water in my microwave for 1 minute..then let it set.

(yeah..I know..probably not the way to have a "proper cup of tea" but..it still tastes wonderful!)

Getting Crafty...(artwork sold thanks Kim)

Well...I finally finished the "Rosalina's Dream" altered art collage image.

It is created on an 8 by 10 canvas using reproduction prints of vintage wallpaper,millinery tag, little girl photo,and images from botanicals... and then I used lace and tiny silk flowers, Printed the words "Dream" in an old style font..and tea dyed the paper letters.

I really like how it turned out.

I have many more ideas floating around in my head for altered art creations.

I have long admired this fun style of creating art and "Rosalina's Dream" was my 2nd attempt at this type of art work.
